Budget Hotels: Whose Budget Are We Talking About?

Budget Hotels… What are they really? An analysis of the budget hotel sector in the UK and how increasingly hostels are plugging the gap in the market budget hotels originally intended to accommodate.

Glasgow (PRWEB) January 8th, 2007 - Euro Hostels, operating top quality budget accommodation for travel to three top destinations in the UK examines the dynamics of the budget hotel and hostel segment of the UK travel industry.

Now there's a question that's on every budget hotel company's lips. What budget are we targeting? With modern usages of budget basically stemming from 'a careful estimate or allotment of funds', the hotel industry is assuming that budget means 'cheap'. But a true budget hotel should simply provide more than is expected for the fee charged.

When budget hotels enter a city they invariably make a splash with cheap prices, exceeding guest expectations for that price point. Invariably, once occupancy builds, the price starts to rise as the budget hotel operator sees the rates other operators are charging in the city and suddenly they are no longer in the budget sector. Expectations for some clientele are no longer met and this segment of the market will seek another operator who does offer the value for money the guest seeks.

Increasingly the hostel market is plugging this segment.

"We call ourselves a 'hostel' for a very good reason," says William McClelland, Operations Director of Euro Hostels Ltd, "we will never need to question the ethos of our business because we have particular market segments in mind".

"If we had tried to sum up the meaning of our properties with standard industry vernacular they would have ended up being called super budget accommodation for the financially prudent."

Far from being the traditional 'backpackers hostel', Euro Hostel provides multiple rooming options that will actually meet everyone's 'budget'. From 12 person shared rooms to private, ensuite doubles with all the trimmings.

"Because we are a firmly committed hostel, you will never see us rise above our station and start overcharging for the product on offer", he continued "we don't need to revisit our original plan, it's incorporated into our logo".

With their flagship property in Glasgow, a summer property in Edinburgh and expansion plans well under way, something seems to be working for this Scottish company.

"When we took over this 10 storey ex-hotel in Glasgow, we knew that we needed to show the budget hotel chains how to do it right", he said "by bringing the market we wanted right up to our doorstep we started breaking down the barriers associated with the word 'hostel'… and it's been working now for 5 years."

"We are adamant about changing the perception of this word that, to us, simply represents value for money".

Every room that the Euro Hostel sells is en-suite, even the big rooms. They have three of the traditional dormitories, with 12 beds in each, but compared to the 115 bedrooms that are single, double, quad or family, this is insignificant. This hostel averages over 80% for its 364 beds annually. It has a bar, guest kitchen, guest laundry, free WiFi, travel desk, Internet kiosk and breakfast is included.

When asked why call it a hostel, Mr McClelland replied "It was a tough decision at the time" and continued "But we knew we could lead the way with this concept and give ourselves an edge over the traditional budget hotels".

"Hostel numbers are growing at an alarming rate now, on the back of the growth in budget hotels. We simply put the two together really".

"We talk in beds around here, never rooms. With our occupancy figures, outstanding design, effective use of space and a large number of quality bunk beds in place, as well as our doubles, it's no wonder we make more actual profit per square metre than the budget hotels do".

So what about customer satisfaction… "Through the roof!"

Free Wi Fi For Glasgow

It's a fact that 21% of budget travellers are now taking their laptops while travelling. To keep up with demand, and to exceed our guests pricing expectations, Euro Hostel Glasgow is now providing free Internet access in its popular Osmosis Bar.

Launched on the 28th of June, we are already seeing many of our guests logging on while enjoying a cold beer and watching a World Cup match.

£1.00 Beds A Huge Success

The "£1.00 Beds" promotion is drawing to an earlier close than expected as stocks of these special rate beds have almost been exhausted.

"The promotion has been a great success" said Monica Docherty, the boss of Euro Hostel Glasgow where this promotion has been run.

"It threw reservations into a bit of chaos on the day of the release as we saw hundreds of bookings come through. The idea was to reach as many people as possible with the product and we certainly did that. The web site went nuts!" she said. "There are still a few beds available on various dates but it is a real matter of hunting through our on-line reservations system for the right time to spend a few days in Glasgow".

"It's a shame it has to end. The word of mouth advertising and the satisfied customers we have created has been phenomonal. But don't worry, this is not the last you'll see of this type of promotion", she said.

With many guests going out of their way to show their appreciation, the reception staff did well out of it as well. One satisfied guest left more in tips than he would have paid at full price.

I'm sure we'll see most of our "one pouders" back again. Job done!

No Smoking!

24th February 2006

In preparation for the new Scottish laws, Euro Hostel is gearing up for a breath of fresh air. Although we have been non-smoking in all rooms since we opened, and throughout the hostel common areas for over a year, our Osmosis Bar has been the only area that it has been permitted. Now, as of March 26th, this area will be Smoke-free as well.

"It's not that we're anti-smoking at all, everyone has the right to do what they like. It's just that now it's the law in Scotland" said Monica Docherty, the General Manager of Euro Hostel Glasgow.

"We're also having a drive on getting the smokers on the staff off cigarettes as well. Over the next couple of weeks we are providing literature and encouraging our staff to attend quit smoking sessions. We want to start a little Euro Hostel support group. I'm currently on the wagon and would like all the help I can get", she said.

More Power and Volume for A New Generation!

AFICIONADOS say that their previous outing in Leeds produced the greatest of all live albums. Now The Who are to return to the city after 36 years.

Today the rock legends Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are to announce an open-air summer concert in Leeds.

The Who last played the city in 1970 when a furious three-hour Valentine's Day concert at Leeds University featuring the band at their peak was captured on tape. About 2,000 students packed the refectory and another 1,000 stood on the roof, soaking up the concert's vibrations through their shoes.

Townshend's searing, improvised guitar solos during a 15-minute take on My Generation were never bettered. The Tommy musical was performed in its entirety. But only six tracks made it on to the famous Live at Leeds album, sparking a trade in bootlegs.

Townshend remixed the Live at Leeds tapes when the full concert was finally released five years ago. He described their primal sound at the time as "power and volume" and the album inspired the heavy metal genre. The band have not set foot in the city since 1970.

The June concert will not be staged at the campus but at Harewood House, home to the Earl of Harewood. VIP hospitality packages are available. However, students hope that Daltrey and Townshend can also be persuaded to return to the university for a concert recreating the magic of 1970.

The Who are recording their first studio album for 25 years, although Townshend admitted that his hearing difficulty has slowed down progress.

The concert is to be the highlight of the O2 Wireless festival staged in Leeds and London on the last weekend of June. The London show, at Hyde Park, will feature James Blunt, KT Tunstall, Depeche Mode and Massive Attack, who will also play in Leeds. The Flaming Lips will appear alongside The Who on 25 June in Leeds.

Stuart Galbraith, the managing director at Live Nation, promoters of Wireless, said: "With Kaiser Chiefs cleaning up at the Brits there is no hotter city musically than Leeds and we are delighted to be bringing The Who back to the city."

  • Wireless London/Leeds day tickets cost £37.50. Call 0871 2309840
  • Those with an O2 mobile phone tariff can get priority access with Ticketmaster on 0871 2305440

£1 Beds! Yes ..... One Pound!!

10th February, 2006

In our boldest move yet, we have launched our latest promotion with quite a fanfare. The following Press Release is being distributed on 14th February to hundreds of newspapers within the UK and European budget airline feeder cities. If they didn't know we existed, they do now!

Get Bunked! For £1 A Night.

Euro Hostel, Glasgow's newest innovation in low cost accommodation, launched its £1 per night bed promotion to fight off the winter blues today,14th February. Over 1000 beds are available for booking on the Euro-Hostel website, www.euro-hostels.co.uk, up until the end of April.

Steve Mackenzie, Euro Hostels Ltd Head of Sales and Marketing, said:

"Glasgow is a fabulous city to visit and we want to encourage people to enjoy its delights. The budget airlines can bring the people to Scotland cheaply, we can accommodate them. Our City Centre location makes it the perfect choice for those who want to spend a night in the city without the cost. Contrary to the popular opinion of a hostel, all our rooms are en suite, which is quite unusual. It is a clean, safe, friendly and fun environment".

With an increasing number of discerning budget travellers, coined the "Flash Packer", Euro Hostels have developed a whole new style of low-cost accommodation that redefines the word 'hostel'.

Steve continues:

"Euro Hostels really do cater for everyone. Most of our rooms are twins, but we have dormitories as well, all with en suite facilities. We are 2 minutes walk form Central Station, provide modern, spacious accommodation, a guest kitchen, fabulous bar and TV lounge all offering that social interaction enjoyed by the budget traveller. The offer beds are spread out at around 20 per day until the end of April, offering a fair deal on availability. We urge our guests to get on line and book today."

Euro Hostel Teams Up!

14th November, 2006

We're all a little sports mad around this place, so when an opportunity to have our very own teams came up, we jumped at it. Well... not really our own teams, but close enough for us.

Originally we only wanted to give "Shuggie", our famous Monster mascot, somewhere to hang out and get his fix of sport and female attention. But then, after we thought about it a for awhile, we realised we should really get into this and give a little something back to the Glasgow community that we know and love.

Well, we started off looking around for a team to get involved with. Strathclyde University was the cry from Jo, a valued receptionist, not that she had her own interests at heart, being a student in those hallowed halls. "Southside Junior Football Club" came the shout from Larraine, one of our longest serving housekeeping legends. "Who?" was the reply, not being completely aware of this little club from Glasgow's south side. Anne, another member of the housekeeping team, who just happens to be the mother of one of the team's little stars, quickly informed us about this club brimming with future Premier League champions.

Well then, a dilemma we seemed to have. What the heck, why not ask both? And before we knew it we were highflying corporate sponsors of these two great sporting associations.

Strathclyde University has some great teams in the BUSA league. We approached Matt Bruce, the president of the University of Strathclyde Sports Union, with this grandiose idea and the rest, as they say, is history!

The guys at the Strathclude Uni Union (official letters USSU) loved the idea of a sponsorship deal and we all signed up for three years. With major sponsorship rights on all team leisurewear, and Shuggie supplying the team support, he is now well on his way to getting his old fan base back again.

The Southside guys were just the same. The teams needed new kit and we came to the party. Well, literally actually. We're also supplying their Christmas party and, of course, Shuggie will get his big head in on the act giving away sweets and party favours for all.

Check out the Gallery page for pics of his latest adventures. Don't be surprised if it's all female netball and basketball though… he's definitely got an eye for the ladies.
