We're Committed to Reducing Our Carbon Footprint by 10% in 2010 and Ongoing!

Without going into the finer details, things like changing our entire hot water system (for a 10-storey building) from a ‘storage’ type to an ‘instant electric’ type and changing our heating control system for the building do not come cheaply. However, we really feel we should be doing our part for the environment and for slowing the effects of man-made CO2 emissions on global warming.

“We committed to this at the start of the year and organised a visit by a consultant from the Carbon Trust” said William McClelland, the Managing Director of Euro Hostels Ltd.

“The report provided at the end of the consultancy was a real eye-opener”.

We have always tried to control our energy use but when a professional in this field points out what else can be done we realised we had a long way to go. Not only with the building’s installed equipment, but also in our own usage habits.

“The first thing we did was to create and adopt an internal Energy Policy that clearly outlines Euro Hostels’ goals and commitment to energy saving. From that we have now introduced our Implementation Action Plan”.

“From the basics like on-going staff training and installing 100% low-energy lighting to changing the boiler system and installing more energy efficient automatic front doors have all been committed to”, said McClelland.

The Action Plan, based on Carbon Trust suggestions, will see a saving of at least 10% in 2010 and a further 10% each year for the next 3 years being achievable. Any future developments within the building will have the required energy efficiency levels at the very top of the list.

Not only are we committed to reducing our own carbon footprint, we are also ensuring our suppliers have energy efficient manufacturing processes in place and recycle wherever possible.
