Cyclists gear up for the 10th Great North Bike Ride
Newcastle hostels could bring welcome relief to those out of breath after taking part in the Great North Bike Ride this weekend.
The annual ride will cover 54 miles of Northumberland countryside to raise money for the Chris Lucas Trust.
Beginning in the Seahouses Tourist Information car park, cyclists will head south along the coastline to Tynemouth in North Shields, very close to hostels in Newcastle.
This year's race is extra special as it is the tenth anniversary of the first ride. The event takes place during the August bank holiday weekend every year. In 2009, 2,302 cyclists took part and raised £100,000 for the Chris Lucas Trust.
The charity was established after Christopher Lucas died in 2000 of Rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer, after a three-year battle.
It raises funds to encourage and support research into the illness and to improve the quality of life of children and young adults suffering from the disease.
