Northern Stage ready to Close the Coalhouse Door

An acclaimed play likened to Billy Elliot and the Pitmen Painters is set for a new production at the Northern Stage theatre, giving people staying in hostels in Newcastle a chance to see it once again.

When Close the Coalhouse Door first debuted in Newcastle in 1968 it was greeted with a sell-out crowd and following the international success of the Pitmen Painters, is set for a revival.

Samuel West directs Alan Plater's play that was originally based upon books by Sid Chaplin, with Billy Elliot and the Pitmen writer Lee Hall contributing material to the production.

The musical play is another celebration of the north-east, telling the story of the lives of miners through exceptional dialogue and touching songs.

Taking the audience through the rollercoaster ride of the mining industry from the creation of the unions in 1831, the play is truly inspirational and offers a moving insight into the lives of northern miners.

Close the Coalface Door runs at the Northern Stage from Friday April 13th until Saturday May 5th.

Tickets cost between £12.50 and £24 and shows start at 7.30pm. There are no shows on Mondays or Sundays.
