Newcastle: Touring Tyneside's cocktail bars
If you're looking for somewhere to drink some seductively sweet beverages while visiting the city, you've come to the right place. Euro Hostel has been out on the town, drinking from the spiral straw and exploring the places in town where ordering a boring pint is frowned upon.
The bars listed here provide such a diverse mixture of tempting concoctions that you'll be truly spoilt for choice. Whether it's afternoon drinks after work or a prelude to a smashing night out, follow our guide and you'll be supping cocktails Sex and the City-style in no time.
Chase
Recently refurbished into one of the smartest spots in all of Newcastle, Chase is now one of the hippest places to enjoy a cocktail.
Situated in the trendy quayside area and within walking distance of Euro Hostel Newcastle, this cocktail bar features a large range of tantalising tipples including delectable daiquiris and mouth-watering martinis. 13 Sandhill, Newcastle, NE1 3AF.
Gotham Town
An evening at the cinema to see the latest exploits of a certain caped crusader of the bar's namesake would be complemented perfectly by a visit to this macabre megapub. The gothic decor and interesting Ye-Olde-Newcastle exhibits make this a very surreal place to be when you've had a few of their excellent cocktails.
The staff have an excellent taste in music as well as beverages, meaning you can sip your cocktail in between nodding along to your favourite song. 2 Douglas House, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5EN, 0191 233 1471.
Revolution
Popular for its stunning venue and fantastic DJs, Revolution mixes a traditional pub-like venue with a state-of-the-art sound system and an extensive list of cocktails.
Offering all of the old favourites including Blue Lagoon, Woo Woo and a variety of Mojitos, it also provides a number of oddities for your taste buds' delight. We can highly recommend the exquisite vodka teapots for a truly British feel; these are all mixed with at least six shots of liqueur. Collingwood Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1JF, 0191 2618 901.
The Living Room
There's a reason that this small but growing chain is becoming ever more popular: their formula contains all the elements for a fantastic drinking experience. Low lighting, chic understated decor and an imaginative cocktail list make this the perfect location for everything from a casual lunch to a girls' night out.
Live piano music in the evenings also gives it a somewhat romantic factor (listen up and take notes, guys) and the restaurant offers a great selection of modern European dishes. 12 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6AE.
Pacific Bar Cafe
Big in every sense of the word, Newcastle's Pacific Bar Cafe is a sprawling bar with three floors and a dynamic modern look. Even the toilets are a tad space-aged, and it can get super-busy on Saturdays.
The fine folks behind the bar also make a mean cocktail, and the regular student clientele means that prices are always good value for money. As if this isn't reason enough, the atmosphere is always lively, with a house DJ who knows what the crowd likes. 12 Northumberland Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 8JF, 01912 450440.
Tokyo
As the name suggests, this gorgeous venue sports an Eastern theme, and the drinks menu is no exception. Enjoy a Singapore Sling or a Tokyo Ice Tea in luxurious surroundings, in the knowledge that there's nowhere in Newcastle quite like this stylish lounge.
Their imaginative list of cocktails will have you returning time and again to sample the various intoxicating interfusions on offer, from fruity little numbers such as the Pineapple Express to the super-strength Tokyo Zombie. 17 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SE, 0191 232 11 22
Popolo
What do you get if you cross a New York bar with an Italian coffee shop? No, it's not a bad joke – the answer is Popolo.
The guys here are pioneers in cocktail making, not only adding new twists to old classics (wasabi in a Bloody Mary? Genius) but also coming up with their own specialities. Feeling particularly decadent? Go for the Millionaire's Margarita on their Premium cocktail menu before washing it down with something from the Favourites list. 16 Bonemill Lane, Fatfield, Washington, Newcast-upon-Tyne, NE38 8AJ.
Perdu Boutique
This stylish, sleek cocktail bar more than holds its own when competing against the big chains, thanks to a great selection of drinks. There are some true gems here that you'll struggle to find anywhere else in town, including the caipirinha (try saying that when you've had a few) and a French variant on the Martini.
The charming opalescent bar features a secret garden and glamorous interior with dangling chandeliers and comfy places to lounge. Perdu also has a vibrant music scene, with dancing every night except Tuesday, making it the cocktail venue where you'd happily spend all night. 20 Collingwood Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1JF, 0191 260 30 40.
