Romantic rendezvous in Newcastle

Viz Magazine's infamous comic strip The Fat Slags doesn't exactly paint a romantic picture of modern Newcastle, and so we're out to prove that this sprawling city of hustle and bustle can be the perfect place for couples staying in hostels in Newcastle to share their love.

With art galleries galore, romantic restaurants and some truly spectacular places to create a lasting impression, the city is ideal whether you're on a first date or have been married for twenty years.

If you're lucky with the weather, start with a trip to Newcastle's quayside area and walk along the Tyne to take in some sights. When the rain clouds come to play, then it's time to check out some of the events below.

The Biscuit Factory
Disclaimer: this isn't actually a biscuit factory. But a visit to this swanky art gallery will give you the perfect chance to show off your sophisticated side to that special someone. Hand in hand, you'll be able to wander through each exhibition, remarking on the imagination and creativity of the artists behind it all.

We can particularly recommend Lizzie Rowe's Under the Northern Stars, on display until September 2nd, featuring a number of gorgeous paintings which are sure to inspire. If you're feeling particularly generous, you might like to buy your other half the piece of art of their choice. 16 Stoddart Street, Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE2 1AN, 0191 261 1103.

Walk through Jesmond Dene
The glorious park of Jesmond Dene lies between Jesmond and High Heaton. Following a £6 million regeneration, it's one of the most wonderful places to be in the city – a beautifully maintained wooded valley which features a variety of animals and plant-life.

Waterfalls, birds and flowers aplenty, there's not much about this place which isn't romantic. Try one of their nature or history trails for a fulfilling educational experience. Jesmond Dene, NE7 7DA.

The Sage
If you want to pluck some heart strings, you'll find music and fun to fill up your day at The Sage. Even if there isn't a big concert on, there's plenty to do at this venue. Evening jazz in the cafe, quiz nights, impromptu Sunday performances, arts and crafts creation, their extensive programme of events features something for everyone.

You don't have to be attending an event to drop in for a coffee and snack, and their brassiere is perfect if you fancy a hearty lunch or dinner. Sleek modern surroundings are sure to impress both you and your date, as will the spectacular views of the river and Millennium Bridge. The menu features an ever-changing array of hot dishes, and a seasonal a la carte selection will have you drooling. Although hopefully not too much in front of your loved one. St Mary's Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE8 2JR, 0191 443 4661.

Salsa-Amor at the Black Swan
Salsa classes are the ideal way for couples to have fun and turn up the heat a little. The relaxed easy-going atmosphere at the Black Swan means you can get the sauciness started with little or no hassle.

Classes are held every Friday for all ages and abilities, so whether you're a beginner just starting out or an experience shaker, you'll be sure to fit right in. After the formal class, you're free to carry on until midnight to classic Latin hits played by the resident DJ. Newcastle Arts Centre, 67 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SG.

Marsden Grotto
They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and it's a short cut that often works with women too, so you should be searching for a romantic place to eat. The Marsden Grotto is an absolute must. Located inside a cave, it's great for that intimate and exciting atmosphere which is so integral to a great romantic night out. The staff are friendly and the service excellent, and the location is simply stunning. The views overlooking the sea make this a spectacular place to spend a special evening, and well worth the 45 minute bus journey from Euro Hostel Newcastle.

The Marsden Grotto specialises in seafood, so expect oysters, squid and other scrumptious delights on the menu. The fish is all caught on the same day by a local fisherman, and the bar is stocked to such a high standard that even an alcoholic pirate would be envious at the selection. Coast Road, South Shields, Tyne and Wear, NE34 7BS0191 455 6060.

Coco V
The best way to round off a romantic evening is with a drink in a stylish bar, and this place is the perfect venue for an intimate party of two.

Named by the girlfriend of the owner two years ago (although even he can't remember what it means) Coco V has a lively Moroccan theme with very attractive surroundings, all chandeliers and velvet red cushions. Although the main area is very spacious and animated, you should grab a booth in the cosy zone at the back for a true feeling of romanticism.

The gentleman will find a selection of beers, ciders and ales to his liking, whilst the lady will surely be delighted by the cocktail menu featuring more than 20 intoxicating substances. Bewick Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5EF, 0191 230 1522.
