Edinburgh for free

Travellers staying at hostels in Edinburgh are not always going to have plenty of cash to splash around. That's why we at Euro Hostel are totally committed to bringing you the best of the city for free. That's right – you can experience this beautiful Scottish metropolis without spending a single penny.

It doesn't matter what you're planning to get out of the city – be it exercise, education, culture or even spiritual enlightenment – we've got a list of fantastic free events and activities below. There is fun for all ages, so put that debit card away and see what you can do without your wallet for a change.

Museums
No visit to Edinburgh is complete without a visit to one of their incredible local museums. There is a vast wealth of Scottish history to be explored throughout the city, with literally hundreds of thousands of items on display.

Ever fancied meeting a Tyrannosaurus Rex? Nip down to the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street. Or is Scottish military past more to your taste? Find out about the battle-ridden history of this country at Edinburgh Castle. Ladies might want to experience the elegance and style of the National Museum of Costume, but if the gents don't want to accompany them, their taste for all things avian will be satisfied at the National Museum of Flight, at Dumfries and East Lothian respectively.

And the best part of these wonderful historic venues? Entry won't cost you a penny.

Cathedrals and churchyards
Enjoy a little spiritual enlightenment at the city's religious establishments. Edinburgh's skyline is punctuated with churches and cathedral spires, and these gorgeous venues are often well worth a visit for their extraordinary architecture and fascinating history.

Wander down to St Giles' Cathedral – often referred to as the cradle of Presbyterianism – and take in the gorgeous stained-glass windows. Head along to Greyfriar's Kirk, frequented not only by graverobbers but also Greyfriar's Bobby, the faithful dog famous throughout the world for remaining by his master's grave long after he'd died. Or visit St Cuthberts and see if you can catch a glimpse of the intricately-painted ceiling high above.

The Scottish Parliament
One of the most visually-striking buildings on Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, the award-winning Scottish Parliament is at the centre of the country's politics. But it's not just where the law is made and debated every day – it's also a unique visitor's centre that offers tours and talks. Book in advance and you can even watch Parliament in action in the committee rooms or debating chamber.

Whether you're an architecture fan or not, the building is stunning to look at. Creator Enric Miralles drew inspiration from a wide range of sources, including Edinburgh's surrounding landscape, flower paintings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and upturned boats on the seashore. See if you can spot where each vein of inspiration comes into play. The Royal Mile, Edinburgh EH99 1SP, 0131 348 5000.

Parks and gardens
For a city, Edinburgh has a lot of beautiful green space, and often feels more rural than urban. Relaxing beside a beautiful calm river, it can be difficult to believe that you're in the middle of the Scottish capital, watching the leaves dance in the wind on the branches of the tree above you.

Sound appealing? Then take a visit to Princes Street Gardens, which features stunning views of Edinburgh castle and a gothic monument that can be climbed for a small fee. Or the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, which covers 72 acres of glorious countryside and is considered to be one of the finest gardens in the world. If that doesn't appeal, go for a walk and scale one of the most recognisable landmarks of Edinburgh's old town: Arthur's Seat.

Art galleries
All art galleries, like museums, are free in Edinburgh. There are some truly wonderful spaces within the city where tourists can take a breather from the hustle and bustle of the city, and just take in some artistic genius.

Lovers of fine art will want to visit the Scottish National Gallery, which houses a superb collection from the early renaissance up to the late 19th century. See if you recognise masterpieces by Monet and Van Gogh, among others.

Those with a more surreal taste will find themselves more at home in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Experience cubism and expressionist genius by Picasso, Matisse and Dali before exploring the wonderful grounds, including vast grass and waterfall structures as well as other artwork.

East Lothian beaches
There's free fun aplenty if you're willing to take a short journey out of the city and hit the sweeping East Lothian coastline. There are two beaches within easy reach of Edinburgh.

Gullane is only a distance of 20 miles and there are regular public transport links. Popular with surfers and dog walkers, you're sure to find something exciting to do there, even if it's just watching the beautiful sunset. Yellowcraig offers a nearby castle and plenty of space for running around, playing sport and flying kites.

Much of East Lothian's gorgeous coastline can be witnessed from the famous John Muir Way, a fantastic coastal path which extends almost 73km, linking the city of Edinburgh with the Scottish borders. Take a stroll if you fancy breathing in a refreshing sea breeze.
