Last minute in Glasgow
Following our highly popular 'Last minute in Newcastle' guide published earlier this month, we've decided to showcase the nearest attractions to the train station in Glasgow, as well as the Geordie capital.
Just so that you're prepared for the eventuality that your train is cancelled and you're left stomping around the train station dragging an extremely heavy suitcase, you have a list of potential events to visit to ensure you won't have to waste precious minutes in this beautiful Scottish city.
As before, the guide is arranged with events that take the least time taking precedence, because you guys without much time on your hands will be in a rush and will need to get to them quickly. But we've also included a number of activities for those who find that their train company has really mucked up and left them stranded for a matter of hours.
So find a lock in the city and stock that case as quickly as you can – Euro Hostel is going to help you make the most of your trip to Glasgow.
30 minutes to an hour
Glasgow's three main train stations can be found to the north, south and west of the city centre. Located directly in the centre of the three transportation hubs, and approximately five minutes walk from each, lies Bar Ten, a cosy bar and cafe combination which has been transformed from an empty warehouse into a truly fantastic venue. If you're short on time, this is the place to go.
It doesn't matter what time it is – grab a coffee and a breakfast if it's too early to hit the bottle, a sandwich and a cup of tea for lunch or a refreshing pre-journey cocktail if you're in the mood to get a little tipsy. The atmosphere, food and service to this place have resulted in the venue being voted one of the top ten destination bars by Yahoo! Travel! UK, so if you have a spare 30 minutes as the result of a train cancellation, get over there and see what all the fuss is about.
An hour to two hours
If you're less pushed for time and really kicking your heels trying to find something to do, then it might be time to squeeze in a little bit of Scottish design and culture. The Lighthouse, located on Mitchell Lane in the city centre, is a truly spectacular venue to take in. Take a trip through time and view Glasgow architecture through the ages with their permanent exhibition on the fourth floor, or take in the incredible design talents of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre, attached to the Lighthouse.
Failing that, simply climb to the top and take in the stunning views of the city as you peer down watch Glasgow from above. Seen everything and still have half an hour? Have a good look around their shop and purchase some personal design magic, or relax for 15 minutes with a cup of tea and a cake in their cafe.
If you're more inclined towards modern art, then Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art is also ten minutes at maximum from any of the three main stations. Affectionately known as GoMA, this venue has much to offer the discerning modern art fanatic. The art is housed inside a truly iconic building at the heart of the city and is known for showcasing work by local artists. So if you're looking to grab a last-minute slice of artistic culture from Scotland before trekking home, this is the perfect location.
Two to three hours
Train company really left you up the spout? Not to worry – we've prepared a host of activities to keep you busy. How about starting with a spot of last-minute shopping? You could grab that gift you meant to get hold of for your brother/aunt/father (delete as appropriate). The central position of Glasgow's train stations means that you'll be exposed to a wealth of excellent shopping venues, from little independent sellers to big-name brands such as Primark and Marks and Spencer. We recommend grabbing some shortbread or something tartan to convince them you've truly 'gone native'.
If you don't want to spend all of that time shopping, how about doing an hour and then settling down for last meal with that special someone? Rogano is a completely unique restaurant that specialises in Scottish locally-sourced seafood. With a cosy art deco style, an oyster bar and an extensive wine list, you're guaranteed to love this venue, and yes – it's just five minutes from any of the largest stations. Perfect.
Still got time for more? Commemorate your visit to Glasgow with a visit to Glasgow Cathedral, a truly beautiful medieval building which is equally stunning viewed from the outside as it is inside. The perfect way to round off your weekend.
