This free exhibition is based indefinitely at The Ware Rooms, and is a must see for all patrons. The Rogues Gallery features a selection of mug shots, kindly donated by Tyne & Wear Archives
& Museums
, from what is thought to be the last surviving
collection of Victorian criminals’ photographs in Newcastle from 1871 - 1873. Clink on the link for a sneak preview.

This collection of fascinating sepia images has drawn the
attention of both local and national media since it’s unveiling in recent months, but why host it here at The Ware Rooms?

Dip into the history of our building on Carliol Square and you’ll
find that this is the site of the former Newcastle House of Correction where many a local criminal was housed or indeed executed; it was here that these photographs were taken and where our rogues served their time.

In fact our bar was named following research into a local character, Henry Cunningham, the ringleader of a gang of prolific thieves who served time in the House of Correction, paying the price for his ill-gotten gains which were stored in his “wareroom”. Sound familiar?

Henry Cunningham was Newcastle’s very own Bill Sykes
character!
