Experience Britain’s greatest Roman monument: 2,000 years in the making.
Hadrian’s Wall is at the heart of Roman Britain telling the dynamic story of the northwest frontier of the Roman Empire. Spanning 80 Roman miles, Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site runs for 150 miles from Arbeia at South Shields to Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast.
The Wall can be seen at extensively excavated Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum in Wallsend which is also where the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail begins (or ends). Nearby NewcastleGateshead, with its award-winning Great North Museum, is an excellent base for exploring Hadrian’s Wall and starting point for your journey west.
The Wall’s central section crosses England’s high northern ridge through spectacular Northumberland National Park, and contains some of the most magnificent Imperial remains. Housesteads Roman Fort is unmissable: magnificent ruins, great museum and spectacular views. There are also brilliant walks through the National Park. At the classic fort and civilian remains of Roman Vindolanda there are some amazing reconstructions; with tremendous treasures showcased at the nearby Roman Army Museum.
