Arty surfers best catch a ride to Newcastle

Newcastle hostels could provide a useful stopover for lovers of art and surfing who intend on visiting an exhibition in the city.

An Art History of British Surfing explores the link between the two expressive hobbies and is likely to be hugely popular among people with an interest in both.

While surfing has perhaps only gained widespread recognition over the last 50 to 60 years, it has been inextricably linked with art for far longer.

Surfing has been referenced in art in Britain for several centuries, with sketches of surfers created during the voyages of Captain James Cook in the 18th century.

In more modern times the link has manifested itself in the creation of sculpted wooden surfboards, posters and, of course, the photography and film that offers the biggest connection to art currently.

The show, which has been put together by Devon-based charity, the Museum of British Surfing, runs until September 19th.
