Newcastle's history can be explored during the Tyne and Wear heritage weekend

Architecture and history enthusiasts could stay in Newcastle hostels next week after visiting the Tyne and Wear heritage open days.

The event, running between September 9th and September 12th, offers people the chance to visit over 200 buildings that would normally charge or be unavailable for public viewing.

People will be able to look at a number of churches in Newcastle along with other buildings such as the Masonic Hall in Elswick.

Sport fans will want to visit the Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club, which will include demonstrations of how handmade Real Tennis balls are made. The court was built in the gardens of the Grade II listed building in 1894 and is one of only 25 real tennis courts in the UK.

Those who enjoy a tipple may want to go on a pubs tour on Friday (September 10th) charting the history of pub culture in Newcastle.

According to the event's brochure, there were 84 activities and buildings resulting in 19,500 visits in 2002 while last year had 211 attractions and 58,265 visits. There will be 215 buildings and activities this year.
