30,000 runners expected to pound the streets of Edinburgh in 2011 marathon

Around 30,000 people are expected to be pounding the streets of Scotland's capital city for charity in May next year and those taking part can stay in Edinburgh hostels after the race.

The application process for the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon, which takes place on May 22nd, has commenced and runners from across the world are signing up to raise money for the charities close to their hearts.

For those that would like something a little less daunting, the Edinburgh half-marathon will also be taking place on the same weekend (May 23rd), giving runners of all abilities the opportunity to get involved.

The route will see competitors run from Holyrood Park, through the streets of the city, before finishing near Musselburgh Racecourse after 26 miles of endurance.

According to the marathon's website, the route has been rated as the UK's fastest because of an elevation drop of 40 metres making it a little easier for runners.

Standard entry is £45, or people can often get entry through a charity-approved place where a minimum fundraising target is set.
