North-east preparing to celebrate the arrival of Chinese new year in February

The north-east will celebrate the Chinese new year in two months' time with a series of events and displays and those looking to join in the fun could stay in Newcastle hostels.

Between February 3rd and 6th, hundreds of people will see in the year of the rabbit through a number of crafts, dances and martial arts displays across the city, culminating in an enormous ceremony on the final day.

Furthermore, dragon, lion and unicorn dances will be taking place under the ceremonial arch of Newcastle as the city comes to life.

Terry Kwong, vice-chairman of the North East Chinese Association, told Chronicle Live after last year's event that the day went "very well".

"We had a tremendous day and I think there were at least 30 per cent or 40 per cent more people than last year," he told the news provider.

"As well as the dancing, there were stalls in the street and inside the Chinese centre we had calligraphy, paper cutting and more stalls."

More of the same is expected this year with hundreds of people predicted to be lining the streets.
