Pandas to be homed in Edinburgh zoo

Wildlife fans planning to stay in Edinburgh hostels will be pleased to hear that the city's zoo is soon to be home to two Pandas.

Tian Tian and Yangguang, a breeding pair born in 2003, are on loan to Britain for ten years following a five-year negotiation.

The agreement was signed on Sunday (January 9th) in London and was witnessed by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and Li Keqiang, China's vice premier.

Liu Xiaoming, ambassador of China to the UK, said: "Pandas are a Chinese national treasure.This historical agreement is a gift to the people of the UK from China.

"It will represent an important symbol of our friendship and will bring our two people closer together."

David Windmill, chief executive officer of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which runs Edinburgh Zoo, added that it was a "landmark day" for the UK, China and Edinburgh Zoo.

This will be the first time in 17 years that pandas have been in Britain.
