History of Scottish textiles explored in new Glasgow exhibition

Those staying in Glasgow hostels may be interested in finding out about the history of textiles in Scotland in a new exhibition.

The Inventors of Tradition is due to open on Saturday (January 22nd) and will run until February 26th.

It documents the intersection between art, design and social history and is a subjective study of the history of the Scottish textiles industry since the 1930s.

Lucy McEachan, curator of the exhibition, told The List: "We wanted to look at the promotion, the processes, remember what a big business textile manufacturing was. It’s not a linear survey, it’s subjective and personal.

"These are not pieces from museum archives. These are things that were tucked into drawers and stored in attics."

The exhibition documents production methods, business practices and the histories of a number of people who worked in the textile industry.

It will be held in the disused retail space of 21 Stockwell Street in the city.
