Glasgow underground set for upgrade

People who are currently planning to stay in Glasgow hostels may benefit from an updated underground system.

This is because the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has gained permission to improve the appearance of three stations in the network, reports Herald Scotland.

One of the stations set to be made over is Hillhead, on Byres Road, which is popular with those staying in the west end of the city. This project is due to be completed by next spring.

Kelvinhall and Ibrox stations are also set for upgrade works and are supposed to be finished before the 2014 Commonwealth Games take place.

Jonathan Findlay, chairman of SPT, told the news provider: "[Hillhead station] will set the standard for how the other 14 will look and I'm delighted that planning permission for its redevelopment has been granted by Glasgow City Council.

"The station will be modern, bright and airy with enhanced design features which will make journeys on the Subway much more enjoyable."

Glasgow's subway system originally opened on December 14th 1896.
