Newcastle photography exhibition to reveal Polish wartime ghetto
Those staying in Newcastle hostels may like to attend a new photography exhibition in the city that reveals Polish ghettos during WWII.
The Lodz Ghetto Album by Henryk Ross is being shown at the Side Gallery until March 26th.
During WWII, Ross was imprisoned in a ghetto and during this time he became one of three photographers employed by the Department of Statistics, which was responsible for a number of duties, including the promotion of the ghetto's factories and preparing the deportation orders.
Away from his official duties, he used his camera to produce a diary of the atrocities happening within the ghettos, such as deportations and hangings.
He also took photographs of the ghetto's elite, showing images of children's birthday parties and lovers in the park.
In 1944, Mr Ross buried the 3,000 negatives of the unofficial photographs he took. He was able to recover these after the war ended, before circulating the images to reveal the horrors of the ghetto.
The images in the exhibition are new prints made from the original negatives.
