Argyll Arcade conservation project complete

Those staying in Glasgow hostels could visit the Argyll Arcade as a two-year conservation project of the centre has recently been completed.

Over £750,000 was invested in order to return the Argyll Arcade to its former glory, reports the Scotsman.

First built in 1827, the Argyll Arcade is Scotland's first ever indoor shopping arcade. Also one of Europe's oldest covered shopping malls, the L-shaped arcade was designed in the Parisian style.

Gordon Urquhart, from the Glasgow City Heritage Trust, which gave £200,000 to the restoration, told the news provider: "The fact that it was a covered mall was quite revolutionary at the time for Scotland and it's something that later architects tried to pick up on.

"It's not just important to the trust but to the city as well. It's one of the icons of retailing to Glasgow if not the whole of Scotland."

The Argyll Arcade is situated at the junction between Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.
