John Martin exhibition opens in Newcastle
Art lovers who are staying in Newcastle hostels may like to attend a new John Martin exhibition that has opened in the city.
John Martin: Heaven & Hell opened in the Laing Art Gallery on March 5th and it will run until June 5th.
It is the first major exhibition of the artist's works in over three decades and is being held as part of the Great British Art Debate, run by the Tate Gallery.
A statement from the art gallery said: "His spectacular, apocalyptic works will be displayed at the Laing, capturing the drama and impact which they had when they were originally displayed."
One image on show in the exhibition is the The Great Day of His Wrath, which was painted between 1851 and 1853.
John Martin was born in Northumberland in 1789 and died in 1854. He is best known as a Romantic painter, engraver and illustrator.
