Edinburgh exhibition to reveal story of Admiral Cochrane

Tourists staying in hostels in Edinburgh may be interested in finding out about Admiral Cochrane.

Admiral Cochrane: The Real Master and Commander reveals the true story behind the Scottish navel officer. It is free to attend and opens on October 7th.

Master and Commander, Captain Horatio Hornblower and Mr Midshipman Easy are all based on the "extraordinary" life of the seafarer.

A statement from the museum said: "Explore Cochrane's life and times through an extraordinary collection of personal possessions and dramatic paintings - a hoard of treasures that have never been seen together before.

"Meet his friends and his enemies and hear what they thought of him, then make up your own mind. Relive Cochrane's greatest feats and discover the fearsome nature of naval warfare."

Highlights of the exhibition include a pocket watch that belonged to Cochrane and the admiral's decorations from Chile, Brazil and Greece.

Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, was born in 1775 in Annsfield, South Lanarkshire.

During his career, he fought in the Napoleonic Wars, the Chilean War of Independence and the Greek War of Independence.
