Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibition to open in Edinburgh

Photography fans staying in city centre accommodation in Edinburgh may like to attend an upcoming exhibition of works by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Edinburgh International Festival has announced that a major new exhibition of the Japanese photographer's works will open in the city on August 4th.

Fans of the photographer may be interested to hear that the exhibition consists entirely of works being shown in Europe for the first time.

It will include 26 large-scale images from Sugimoto's most recent series, Lightning Fields and Photogenic Drawings.

A statement from the gallery said: "Lightning Fields is a series of dramatic and spectacular photographs produced through the play of violent electrical discharges on photographic film.

"This revelatory exhibition will allow audiences to experience first hand Sugimoto's exploration of the very nature of photography."

Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. In 2009, he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale, which is a prize awarded by the imperial family of Japan on behalf of the Japan Art Association.
