Edinburgh exhibition reveals medieval plague doctors

People who are staying in Edinburgh hostels could attend an exhibition that reveals the plight of medieval plague doctors.

Frank To, a Glasgow-based artist, is hosting his first major exhibition for two years in the Leith Gallery.

The exhibition, entitled The Human Condition, contains 22 paintings by the artists. It opened on April 1st and it will run until April 30th.

To revealed: "I've always been fascinated with the 1600s and 1700s, when science was starting to emerge but alchemy was still prevalent - and the plague doctors were alchemists as well as physicians.

"I first came across an image of the plague doctors three years ago and this fascinated me and prompted me to research the subject extensively."

Through his research, the artist found that there were two plague doctors in Edinburgh. The city has hit with the plague in the 1600s.

A plague doctor was a special physician who saw those who had the bubonic plague. They were specifically hired by towns that had many plague victims during epidemics.
