Newcastle to host Turner Prize

Art fans may well be in need of city centre accommodation in Newcastle as it has been revealed that the Turner Prize exhibition will be taking place there this year.

This year's Turner Prize will be presented at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in NewcastleGateshead.

Penelope Curtis, director of the Tate Britain, revealed that this is the first time that BALTIC has hosted the Turner Prize and that she is delighted to have furthered the partnership between pre-eminent regional galleries and the Tate.

Sarah Stewart, interim chief executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative said: "I would like to extend my congratulations to everyone involved in bringing The Turner Prize to NewcastleGateshead.

"The Turner Prize continues to encourage debate about visual arts and I can think if of no better city to engage in the debate than NewcastleGateshead - a city that has been transformed through culture and the arts."

Previous winners of the Turner Prize include Damian Hirst and Steve McQueen.
