Robert Breer exhibition set for Newcastle

Art-lovers who are planning to stay in hostels in Newcastle may enjoy attending a new exhibition of works by Robert Breer.

Robert Breer is set to open at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on June 11th and it will run until September 25th.

The artist, who was born in Detroit in 1926, began producing abstract paintings while he was in Paris in the 1950s.

However, he moved into experimental film shortly after and began producing short films.

The exhibition brings together the artist's paintings, films and sculptures that he has created over the past 60 years.

A statement from the gallery said: "Breer became a pioneer of animation, discovering new techniques by trial and error, experimenting at every turn using line, collage, photographic images and overlaid found objects.

"His animations test the eye, continually creating new associations through unprecedented manipulations of filmic imagery, colour, time and space."

The most recent film made by Breer was 2003's What Goes Up. According to the Harvard Film Archive, he was a founding member of the American avant-garde.
