Exhibition of banned books set for Edinburgh

Literature fans who are planning to stay in hostels in Edinburgh may want to incorporate a trip to a new exhibition as part of their trip.

The National Library of Scotland (NLS) is currently hosting an exhibition showcasing banned books from history.

Banned books: Censorship of the printed word opened at the library on June 24 and it will run until October 31st.

Admission to the exhibit is free and it is open every day of the week.

Attendees will learn about the relationship between censor and author - finding out how some authors choose to censor their own work or publish overseas or anonymously.

The NLS said: "Some exhibits will be no surprise. When exploring controversial material, we could hardly ignore 'The Kama Sutra' or 'Lady Chatterley's lover Lover', for instance.

"Harry Potter books though? And why would a banned publications list include 'Woman's Weekly' magazine? Offence can be caused by unexpected items, as the exhibition illustrates."
