Mervyn Peake exhibit set to open in Newcastle

Illustration fans who are preparing to stay in hostels in Newcastle may like to check out a forthcoming exhibition of works by Mervyn Peake.

Lines of Flight, Mervyn Peake, the Illustrated Work is due to open at the Laing Art Gallery on October 15th and it will run until January 8th next year.

The exhibit is being held to celebrate what would have been Peake's 100th birthday.

Peake, who died in 1968, was a writer, artist, poet and illustrator best known for his Gormenghast books.

A statement from the gallery said: "The illustrations will bring together some of his most beautiful illustration works in one of the largest Mervyn Peake retrospectives ever staged.

"Visitors young and old will delight in seeing much loved characters from the Gormenghast trilogy, Tales by the Brothers Grimm, Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of The Snark [and] Johann David Wyss' Swiss Family Robinson."

Illustrations from Robert Louis Stephenson's Treasure Island and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde will also be on show.
