Newcastle gallery showcasing Maurizio Anzeri works

Art lovers who are getting set to stay in city centre accommodation in Newcastle may like to check out some works by Italian artist Maurizio Anzeri.

An exhibition of his works is being held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and it will run until October 2nd.

The artist creates portraits by sewing directly into vintage photographs.

In a statement, the gallery said: "Using portraits from the 1930s and 1940s collected at flea markets, Anzeri overlays abstract designs by sewing intricately patterned threads directly onto the photographic surface.

"Obscuring part of the photograph he both hides and heightens certain features of the face. His precise juxtapositions transform the discarded image, giving his portraits a disquieting and psychological presence."

Following the Maurizio Anzeri exhibition, the Baltic will be hosting the Turner Prize 2011.

Visitors can see works by this year's entrants from October 12th through to January 8th next year.
