Visceral video and audio installation opens at contemporary art gallery

Art fans staying at hostels in Newcastle may be interested to see a new audio visual installation that has just opened at the famous Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Cantata Profana by Matt Stokes is a breathtaking AV installation created in collaboration with Orlando Gough, a leading British composer.

Drawing on the guttural sounds of six grindcore vocalists, Cantata Profana interlaces classical choral traditions with the culture surrounding extreme metal music to create a startlingly successful amalgamation.

Set against a backdrop of an antiquated radio studio, the combination of an intense sound with the contortionist movements of the vocalists creates a profound installation.

The result is an intensely atmospheric work that immerses its audience in a uniquely odd environment.

Found on South Shore Rd, recently voted the UK's 'hippest street' by Google, the landmark Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art sits next to the iconic Millennium Bridge in a former Gateshead flour mill.

Cantata Profana is open until October 7th. Entrance is free.
