Scottish National Portrait Gallery to reopen

Following a huge renovation project, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery is set to welcome people staying in hostels in Edinburgh through its doors again from the beginning of December.

With a dramatic overhaul of the historic building and its collections, the gallery which first opened in 1889 is preparing for a grand opening this year.

New displays and a comprehensive overview of Scottish history will be on show for visitors, with extensive exhibitions comprising paintings, photographs and sculptures of past and present.

Various exhibitions along different themes have been curated for the opening of the gallery, with particular highlights including 'Romantic Camera' and 'Pioneers of Science'.

The former is described as the "opening masterpiece" by the gallery and will highlight some of the greatest photographic works held in the National Galleries' collection.

The latter looks at the impressive figures who have pioneered scientific advancement in Scotland, with portraits of John Logie Baird, Alexander Fleming and even Dolly the sheep.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery opens on December 1st.
