Commonwealth Games

23 Jul - 03 Aug 14, Glasgow

On the 9th of November 2007 Michael Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation announced Glasgow as the host of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Glasgow edged out rivals Nigeria to win the right to host the games, a decision celebrated by a host of politicians, athletes and members of the public who had gathered in Glasgow’s Old Fruit Market to await the decision.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called the win "a momentous day for Scotland, not just in terms of sporting achievement but also in our bid to inspire a whole generation to live healthier, more physically active lifestyles."

Michael Cavanagh of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland commented that "athletes will have the opportunity to compete on home soil inspiring them to produce the performances of their lives, with the support, passion and enthusiasm of the Scottish public. It gives our athletes, who are currently showing real potential in their sport, a tremendous incentive to work even harder to be selected for the Scottish team and for many of them to win medals for Scotland, in Scotland."

Bring on 2014.
