Glasgow Football Teams

‘The Old Firm’; Celtic and Rangers' world famous grudge matches are an unmissable sporting event.

One of the oldest and fiercest derbies in world football history, it dates back to the late 1800's, when Celtic were founded in Glasgow's East End in 1888. The teams first met at Celtic Park on May 28, 1888 in what was also the Parkhead club's first ever match when 2000 fans watched Celtic win 5-2.

The nickname ‘The Old Firm’ originated in the early years of the 20th Century when the two clubs began to dominate Scottish football and referred, in part, to the massive financial gains associated with their frequent meetings.

No two teams throughout the world have dominated a national championship like Celtic and Rangers, having won between them 87 of the 105 titles since 1890.

There are other teams in this great city, however, Partick Thistle play at the famous Firhill Stadium and play in Scotland's First Division. Also Queen's Park, Scotland's only amateur team in the senior game play their home matches at the National Stadium, Hampden Park

It is not just the men who enjoy football here, the Glasgow City Ladies Football Club are well established in the European game. With not only several Scottish Women's Premier League and Scottish Cup titles, Glasgow City have gone on to excel in the Women's Champion's League, only losing out in the last 16 in 2011.
